Essential Mindset tips for Entrepreneurs

The mind is a powerful thing. Depending on how it’s set it can either be a valuable asset or something that can stop you dead in your tracks. 

It’s important you keep a growth mindset when running your business. A fixed mindset is going to be nothing but a hindrance to you.  

Allow me to explain the difference between the two to illustrate why you need to have a growth mindset in order to succeed.

 

What Is the difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset?

A fixed mindset is the belief that things about yourself like intelligence is set at birth or predetermined and cannot be changed. Things are fixed. You were never good at math and therefore never will be. No matter what you do you cannot change this.

A growth mindset is the opposite of the fixed mindset. This is the belief that things about yourself like intellect can be changed if you put enough work and effort into it. You weren’t good at math but if you put enough effort in then you CAN become a mathematician if you want. Change is possible. 

Having a growth mindset is critical to success. I'm not just your business but all aspects of your life. Belief is very powerful and if you think you can or you can’t, you're correct. 

 

Now that we know the difference what are some things we can do to develop a growth mindset?

2 Big tips for developing a strategic mindset

A growth mindset isn’t something that you can develop overnight. It’s going to take a lot of time and effort on your part.  But this is exactly what having a growth mindset is all about and it starts with your thoughts. 

Realize that every thought you have is a choice.  Your thoughts don't just happen to you.  You get to choose them.

Your thoughts in turn influence your feelings. That feeling of dread or doom and gloom you have doesn't come out of nowhere. You needed to have thought of something that made you feel that way.  Feelings are always preceded by thoughts

Your actions are then affected by your feelings. You take action or you don’t. Maybe you act in a certain way because of how you feel. Finally your actions lead to your results. And those results are always a reflection of what your initial thought was.

Thoughts are key and where it all begins.  If you are able to control your thoughts you're able to control everything else. Because of this, know that you're never “stuck” or “overwhelmed”. 

You only have the thought that you’re stuck or overwhelmed. These are things that you’re choosing to think. You’re choosing that over another thought. Because you’re making this choice, you can always make a different one.

In the world of neuro linguistic programming there is a belief that we always have a positive intention with our behaviours. Even if it doesn't seem like it on the surface. We need to dig deep to find out what positive effect our actions are having for us.

Lets use a simple example of the thought...

“I don’t have money and i can’t invest in my business”

What positive reward might you be getting from having this thought?  Maybe you have a full time job that you don’t want to leave.  It's comfortable there and you know everything.  If you invest in your business and it succeeds, you’d have to leave that job you're so comfortable in.

Maybe having this thought means you don't have to be uncomfortable. You don't have to be uncomfortable learning sales activities and putting yourself out there.

Really dig deep when you’re trying to find out what positive reward your thoughts are giving you. 

Have the right mentality of success

Be who you want to be before you get there. How does the person who already has what you want showing up? Step into their shoes now.

  • Who are you as a CEO? 
  • How are you operating your company?
  • How are you showing up on the things that your doing?
  • How are you showing up for sales?

Ask yourself these questions. Embody who you want to be now. Hoping and wishing that it comes true is only that, hoping and wishing.

The other half of having the right mentality of success is knowing that success means to you.  You define success and what you think success is might be different from what I think, or what anyone else thinks.

Personally, my version of success is getting to be in my PJs all day, getting to have messy hair and not having to be in the office.  Some of my friends and colleagues want to have in person interaction with people and they want to have an in person business.

Once you know your definition of success then you can build your business accordingly. Make sure that you're building the business you want.  No two dreams are alike, make sure you’re following yours.

Having a growth mindset makes building and growing your business not only possible but you’ll have an easier time doing it if you're not fighting with that voice inside your head.
